Topic, text, or PDF
Generate a course from a topic title and audience, or from an uploaded PDF such as a set of client SOPs.

ai-functions/images/edzcoursegen-index-1.pngStanding up a new course from scratch — outlining topics, writing every lesson, and authoring quiz questions — is slow, and turning a stack of SOPs or a PDF into structured training is even slower.
The AI Course Builder generates a fully structured course — topics, subtopics, lesson content, and multiple-choice quizzes — from a topic name, a block of text, or an uploaded PDF. A four-step wizard keeps a human in the loop at every stage, so nothing is created until you confirm.
Topic, text, or PDF
Generate a course from a topic title and audience, or from an uploaded PDF such as a set of client SOPs.
Human-in-the-loop wizard
A four-step wizard lets you review and edit topics and content — nothing is created in your course until you confirm.
Native Moodle output
Creates one section per topic, a Page activity per subtopic, and a Quiz activity per topic with questions in a dedicated question-bank category.
Save and resume drafts
Drafts store the entire wizard state and auto-save after each step, so you can resume, rename, duplicate, or delete them per course.
Teachers
In your course, go to Course administration → More → AI Course Builder, then work through the wizard: provide the course details (and an optional PDF), set learning preferences, review the generated topics, and review the generated content. Select Create course content to build it as native Moodle sections, pages, and quizzes. See Building a course.
Administrators
Supply the provider keys and models, and set limits such as request timeout and max PDF size, in Admin settings.
The four-step wizard
Step 1 collects the topic title, target audience, an optional description, and an optional PDF to generate from. Step 2 sets level (Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced), tone (Formal / Conversational / Engaging), and duration (15–120 minutes). Step 3 returns editable topic cards — edit title, description, objectives, duration, and an Include quiz toggle with a question count; add, delete, reorder, or regenerate topics. Step 4 generates subtopics with full lesson content and quiz questions, all editable before creation.
What gets created
On confirmation the builder creates one section per topic, one Page activity per subtopic, and one Quiz activity per topic (questions land in a dedicated question-bank category). A progress view reports each item, including a clear report if a single item fails while the rest succeed. It can also generate an interactive Check-for-Understanding widget from selected text.
Drafts and admin
Drafts save from Step 3 onward (and auto-save after each generation step), storing your entire wizard state; the Drafts page lets you Resume, Rename, Duplicate, or Delete. Administrators configure provider keys and models (OpenAI text and image, ElevenLabs for audio, HeyGen for avatar video), limits like request timeout and max PDF size, and which editor tools are enabled — and every provider call is logged with an estimated cost.
No. The wizard has a human-in-the-loop review at every stage — nothing is created in your course until you select Create course content.
Yes. Upload a single PDF (up to the size your administrator allows), such as a set of SOPs, and the builder generates the course from it.
One section per topic, one Page activity per subtopic, and one Quiz activity per topic — all native Moodle content — with quiz questions in a dedicated question-bank category.
No. Save as draft from Step 3 onward (the builder also auto-saves), then Resume, Rename, Duplicate, or Delete drafts from the per-course Drafts page.
Content and image generation can take 30–120 seconds per call. Behind a reverse proxy, administrators should keep the read timeout high enough (for example ≥ 180 seconds) so long generations aren’t cut off.
After a course is built, you can enrich any text in the Moodle editor — generate images, infographics, narration, or avatar video — with the AI editor tools.
